If you import, distribute, or install gas appliances in the Middle East, Latin America, Russia, Central Asia, or North Africa, you already know one thing: the "same" tankless water heater can behave very differently across borders. Gas pressure fluctuates. Altitude changes combustion. Bathroom layouts rarely follow European venting standards. And end users expect endless hot water without a whiff of exhaust indoors.
That is exactly where the flue exhaust tankless instant gas water heater — often called a forced exhaust or power vent unit — earns its place on the wall. It is not a marketing label. It is a specific combustion and venting architecture engineered to make instantaneous gas heating safe in real-world buildings, not just in laboratory conditions.
This guide is written for the people who have to answer the hard questions in a purchase order: what actually happens inside the unit, why the flue system matters more than the burner spec sheet, and what a serious manufacturer should be able to prove before you sign.
A tankless — or instant — gas water heater ignites only when a tap opens. Cold water enters the heat exchanger, a gas burner fires, and hot water leaves the outlet within seconds. Because the burner runs at high input (typically 16 kW to 32 kW for domestic models), it produces a matching volume of combustion by-products: water vapor, carbon dioxide, small amounts of carbon monoxide, and heat.
Those by-products have to leave the building. How they leave defines the category:
- Natural draft (open flue, Type B): Relies on the buoyancy of hot gases and room air for combustion.
- Flue exhaust / forced exhaust (Type C or fan-assisted Type B): Uses an internal fan to actively push combustion products through a rigid flue pipe to the outside.
- Balanced flue / room-sealed (Type C): A concentric pipe simultaneously draws outside air in and pushes exhaust out; the combustion chamber is sealed from the room.
A flue exhaust tankless instant gas water heater sits in the middle category — and increasingly overlaps with the third. The defining component is the exhaust fan (induced-draft or forced-draft blower) installed at the top of the combustion chamber. It does three things that a passive flue cannot:
- Guarantees exhaust removal regardless of weather. Wind pressure, negative pressure from bathroom extractors, or a cold chimney can all reverse a natural draft. A fan overrides them.
- Enables longer and more flexible flue routing. Horizontal runs, elbows, and rooftop terminations become possible without losing draft.
- Allows precise air-fuel ratio control, because the airflow is measured, not assumed.
For markets where installations happen in tight utility rooms, above kitchen cabinets, or behind concealed panels, that fan is the difference between a compliant install and a callback.
Open a well-engineered flue exhaust tankless unit and you will find a repeatable stack of components. Each one exists because of a specific failure mode observed in the field.
Most instant gas water heaters use either an atmospheric multi-jet burner (simpler, tolerant of gas quality) or a partial-premix burner (cleaner, more efficient, requires stricter pressure regulation). Export markets with unstable LPG supply — parts of Africa, rural Latin America, remote CIS regions — generally reward the atmospheric design for its forgiveness. Urban natural gas markets in Europe and the Gulf reward premix designs for lower NOx.
A flue exhaust configuration works with both, but only if the burner is matched to the fan curve. A mismatch produces yellow flames, sooting, and eventually a blocked heat exchanger.
Copper conducts heat about 25 times better than stainless steel, which is why most 10 L to 20 L instant units still use oxygen-free copper coils. On flue exhaust models, the coil geometry is optimized for the forced airflow: fin pitch is denser, and the primary heat exchanger sits directly in the flame path so that combustion heat is captured before the fan pulls the gases upward.
Higher-end condensing tankless units add a secondary stainless heat exchanger that recovers latent heat from the water vapor in the exhaust. The fan is what makes that recovery possible — without forced draft, condensate would flood a passive chimney.
This is the component that gives the category its name. In a domestic 10 L to 16 L flue exhaust tankless heater, the blower typically runs from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm, is DC-brushless for modulation, and is controlled by a Hall-effect sensor feeding back to the main PCB. If the fan does not reach a target speed within a set time window after a hot-water call, the burner is not allowed to ignite. No fan, no fire — that is the rule.
A flame rectification rod or thermocouple sits in the flame envelope. It reads whether combustion is actually happening, several times per second. If the flame is lost — because gas pressure dropped, because a downdraft blew it out, because the fan stalled — the gas valve closes within 0.5 to 2 seconds depending on standard (EN 26, ANSI Z21.10.3, GB 6932).
Two more sensors close the loop:
- A flue temperature sensor watches the exhaust. If it climbs too high, the unit assumes a blockage or heat exchanger scaling and shuts down.
- An incoming-water temperature sensor plus an outlet temperature sensor verify that the burner modulation is producing the temperature the user asked for. Runaway heating triggers a lockout.
For a buyer, the presence and quality of these sensors — not the sticker on the front panel — determine whether the unit can genuinely be sold as a "flue exhaust safe" tankless heater.
A tankless gas water heater installed in a spacious European utility room is a very different problem from the same unit installed in:
- A Moscow apartment where winter downdrafts can push exhaust back down an open chimney.
- A São Paulo kitchen where a bottled LPG cylinder feeds unstable pressure.
- A Riyadh villa where summer ambient temperatures push flue metal near its safety limits.
- A Lima or La Paz installation at altitude, where reduced air density starves the burner.
- A Cairo or Algiers installation in a small bathroom with a shared vent shaft.
In every one of those scenarios, a flue exhaust architecture provides a reserve of safety that a natural-draft unit cannot. The fan compensates for downdrafts. Sensor logic detects thin air. Sealed pipe runs prevent shared shafts from cross-contaminating adjacent flats.

A serious flue exhaust tankless heater is specified per gas family:
- G20 — natural gas at ~20 mbar, common across most European and Gulf gas networks.
- G25 — natural gas at ~25 mbar, historically used in the Netherlands and parts of Belgium.
- G30 / G31 — butane and propane (LPG), used from Latin America to remote regions of the CIS and Africa.
The physical differences are large: LPG carries more than twice the calorific value per cubic meter of natural gas, and burns with a shorter, hotter flame. Converting a heater from NG to LPG requires:
- Swapping the injector nozzles to a smaller diameter.
- Re-tuning the gas valve inlet pressure (typically 20 mbar NG vs. 28–37 mbar LPG).
- Recalibrating the modulating valve current curve on the PCB.
- Verifying combustion by CO/CO₂ analysis in the flue, which is only meaningful when a forced exhaust makes the sample repeatable.

Regulatory documentation is where a lot of imported product fails silently. Buyers should insist on:

If a supplier cannot produce test records for a specific serial number on request, treat it as a red flag. The difference between a compliant flue exhaust unit and a decorative one lives in those records.

- Dedicated production lines for the category. Flue exhaust tankless units share very little tooling with storage water heaters or wall-hung boilers. A supplier who makes all three on the same line usually compromises on one.
